Not sure how to find gear for my height(6'9")

I'm a brand new backpacker looking to get my first gear. I'm reading a couple of books and have some experienced friends who are giving me a lot of help. But there's a slight problem: the authors and my friends are all normally-sized humans, and I'm 6'9"/205 cm yeti. Are there other tall hikers here who can help me figure out where to shop? I'm especially concerned about sleeping bag and bivy sack. Thanks for your time!

Do you live near a smaller, independently-owned backpacking shop? If you can get to know the staff they might be able to contact their suppliers and special-order longer/larger gear and clothing for you. Many manufacturers make larger-sized versions of clothing and gear, but stores don't carry them because they don't have much demand. These stores are often willing to provide better customer service and order these for you.

Online stores will sometimes include larger/taller sizes in their "catalog," too. If all else fails, try manufacturer websites.

If you're handy, make-it-yourself might also be a possibility.

Go car camping in a tent with a blanket or something to make sure you even enjoy that. I have known people who dropped hundreds on gear and had never even slept outside before, then realized they hated it. Just my two cents.

Cottage manufacturers often are more accommodating to people of various sizes. They often make things to order and people needing off-sizes are often willing to spend a bit more for something that works.

They also sell a bivy sac but it only fits up to 6'6". Bivy's are not there standard business, but they may be willing to customize.
