Not sure how to find gear for my height(6'9") - 08/04/17 05:44 PM

I'm a brand new backpacker looking to get my first gear. I'm reading a couple of books and have some experienced friends who are giving me a lot of help. But there's a slight problem: the authors and my friends are all normally-sized humans, and I'm 6'9"/205 cm yeti. Are there other tall hikers here who can help me figure out where to shop? I'm especially concerned about sleeping bag and bivy sack. Thanks for your time!

Do you live near a smaller, independently-owned backpacking shop? If you can get to know the staff they might be able to contact their suppliers and special-order longer/larger gear and clothing for you. Many manufacturers make larger-sized versions of clothing and gear, but stores don't carry them because they don't have much demand. These stores are often willing to provide better customer service and order these for you.

Online stores will sometimes include larger/taller sizes in their "catalog," too. If all else fails, try manufacturer websites.

If you're handy, make-it-yourself might also be a possibility.

This forum lists several companies for different gear. https://backpackinglight.com/forums/topic/66746/ I personally have a Zpacks brand backpack and love it. I have heard great things about some of the other brands listed. Here is another link to someone about your size and a list of the gear they found. https://tall.life/ultralight-backpacking-gear-for-tall-people/ Also, before you drop hundreds of dollars on gear make sure you try camping outdoors. Go car camping in a tent with a blanket or something to make sure you even enjoy that. I have known people who dropped hundreds on gear and had never even slept outside before, then realized they hated it. Just my two cents.

Cottage manufacturers often are more accommodating to people of various sizes. They often make things to order and people needing off-sizes are often willing to spend a bit more for something that works.

Enlightened Equipment sells quilts (look into them) and bags for people up to 7 foot! https://enlightenedequipment.com/ https://enlightenedequipment.com/

They also sell a bivy sac but it only fits up to 6'6". Bivy's are not there standard business, but they may be willing to customize.

TarpTent sells some tents for tall people: https://www.tarptent.com I would contact them with your desires/specs and see what they recommend.

MLD sell custom bivy's. They should be able to help you out:

*Note: I've heard a lot of good things about MLD, but I have never purchased anything from them. I have purchased and am very happy with stuff from EE and TarpTent. I don't have a commercial interest with any of the companies I linked.

Thanks for the recommendation, BZH! I'll take note of this as well. grin
