obviously this is subjective....

I would add 2-3 methods for starting a fire. (oh wait, you are in SoCal. Scratch fire methods.....the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few...better to die in SoCal than to start a fire) smile
A poncho.
Another shelter option, like BIG trash bag, or a small tarp.
A couple energy bars (food)
A method to purify water.
A method to boil water.
Tape
Some type of cordage. I really like bankline as opposed to mason line or paracord.
Sunglasses
A beanie and leather gloves for summer.
signal mirror

Thanks for your inputs. I have added to my list. What sort of tape do you recommend in addition to duct tape?

I like either the silk medical tape, or the cloth sports tape, usually about an inch wide. I usually get the silk tape in 2 inches wide. I drop the moleskin and take the tape instead. It gets used more than most of the other stuff I bring.

If you check the articles and gear lists on the home page of this site, left hand column, you'll find a day hike gear list and an article on "Hiking Essentials." Both will give you the information you are looking for.
