Suggestions book dehydrating food - 01/17/12 11:46 PM

Hey everyone,
I was just wanting some suggestions on a good book about dehydrating food. I am looking for something more on the preparing ahead end of things rather than the cooking end. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,

Food to Go:
- over 160 pages is a lot of content and that means lots of recipe ideas logically broken up into chapters
- five day menus in table format. They are easy to follow and a no brainer for those in a hurry;
- high quality of the photos accompanying the recipes; and
- international contributions that introduce food ideas I wouldn’t have considered.

Freezer Bag Cooking by Sarah Kirkconnell ("Sarbar" on this forum). She also has a wonderful website, trailcooking.com, with lots of recipes, food preparation hints, dehydration instructions, etc. Her website is the first place I go when I have questions!

Her method is really rehydrating, not cooking, meals in a freezer bag--i.e. you pour in hot water and let the bag sit inside a cozy until it's ready. Sarah is my heroine, because I hate washing dishes! With her method, the only item needing washing is the spoon! Of course if you prefer to rehydrate your meals in your cooking pot (better for groups), she describes how to do that with each recipe, too.

Your state Agricultural Extension Service is also an excellent source for information on dehydration, although not necessarily as related specifically to backpacking meal preparation. If you have no experience at all with dehydration, I'd start there.

Linda Yaffe's books are a fantastic start, The Backpack Gourmet, and High Trail Cookery.

Also A Fork in the Trail by Laurie Ann March. I think Laurie Anne's new book is out now too.

Between these two authors, you will have plenty of recipes for meals to dehydrate for the trail.

A non-book resource is Babelfish5 on youtube, he also goes by Hungry Hammock Hanger. Great recipes from a good ole cajun boy.
