Battery replacement in Timex watch

This is probably one of those only occasionally useful posts but I thought it might help someone.

I just had the occasion to replace the battery in my Timex Indiglo Expedition watch. When I replaced the battery (CR 2016), the LCD screen stayed blank. I checked several places on the web and found that the battery needs to be shorted to the "AC pad" to reset the circuitry before the watch will work again. To accomplish this, do the following: Locate the small arrowhead on the battery cover that points to a shiny silver-colored piece on the watch circuit board. Briefly connect this to the small tab the battery cover screw goes through and the watch will fire up and be ready to be reset. I just bent a paper clip to the right shape and used that as a conductor for shorting.

The whole battery replacement is done as follows: Remove the four screws that hold the back in place; you will need a #00 Phillips screwdriver to do this. Remove the back. Locate the battery cover screw and remove (also a #00 Phillips). Lift the battery cover screw tab and then pull the battery and its cover from the watch (there is another tab that fits in a slot opposite the screw tab. Peel the battery cover off the old battery and replace the battery with a new one. Then just reverse the steps to re-assemble. The last step before replacing the back is to do the reset/short procedure.

An alternative to this procedure is to send the watch to Timex; I have been told they will replace the battery for $20.00 plus shipping. I spent $2.00 for the battery IIRC and had the #00 Phillips in my tool kit. You can get the small Phillips screwdriver from Harbor Freight or from a real hardware store (probably not Ace or True Value).

Another option - I have the very same watch and when the battery died, I took it into a watch store in the local mall. Three minutes and five bucks later, I had a running watch once more. Of course, I attribute it all to voodoo, and you actually know what makes your watch tick. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Yeah, that is what I would have liked to have done but when I took the watch into a place in Tucson, I was informed, somewhat snottily, that "they didn't work on disposable watches". So, being of Scottish descent, I got out the screwdriver and started work. If you look at the money I might have saved; well, maybe a few bucks. If you count my time, even at minimum wage, it was probably a $40.00 job. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I have an old Timex "Ironman" series watch. The darn thing just won't die and I've done several battery changes over about 8 years. The procedure is the same as your watch but without the reset sequence. I lost one battery cover screw but it does fine without it and now it's lighter <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Last summer the "set" button quit working but a small bit of foil betwen the watch case and the innards fixed it.

It has been a good little watch.

What is the model number?
I didn't know they made an expedition indiglo LCD.
Mine is the WR-50 Timex Indiglo.
It is analog with a calender wheel.

Well, I don't know the model number; it is not printed on the watch and I tossed the box three years ago. But, it says "Expedition" right there on the top of the watch face together with " Water 100m Resistant". On the bottom of the face is a button with "Indiglow" printed on it and when I push the button, the LCD screen lights up with a blue-green color. My granddaughter loves the light and keeps pushing the button; perhaps that's why I had to replace the battery. The light and the chronometer are the main reasons I got this particular watch although having it tell time and the date are also a plus. The watch is pretty scratched up and scuzzy by now and the leather watch band has a peculiar odor to it but otherwise, it's as good as new. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Yah, the backlight glow takes a lot of battery!
Maybe you should get your daughter her own- and have her replace the battery!
