Hiking GPS Map app for iPad Mini recommendation - 01/18/13 01:32 PM

Ive been using Backcountry navigator on my Samsung Galaxy III phone for 3 months now. I just purchased a new apple iPad Mini for camping and backpacking. I wanted something bigger to read while at a basecamp.

Which is the best Apply iPad hiking app out there as good or better than Backcountry Navigator?

You're probably best off looking at the reviews in the app store. I don't recall anyone here using an iPad while backpacking.

If you find something, good or bad, let us know.

If to speak about the best iPad apps, I think Spyglass is a top-notch. I use it for on-road and off-road navigation, camping, boating and hiking. It's extremely accurate and and is crammed with useful info: a high-tech viewfinder (HUD), MIL-SPEC compass, gyrocompass, tactical GPS, speedometer, altimeter, rangefinder, sextant and more..

I don't think many of our members are taking an iPad with them on backpacks, but you never know.

I see Spyglass has a speedometer. In my case it would get stuck at 2 mph. Also, I am not sure what the difference would be between a "tactical GPS" and plain old garden variety GPS. Sounds like marketing hype to me.
