In the ham radio hobby we loft balloons and kite/balloon hybrids to drag antenna wires way up high. Wind will lay a balloon down sometimes, so with kite wings, they stay up wind or not.
Funny....I had a ranger investigate a pocket parafoil kite I put up, out in the desert once. Said he couldn't see me but could see the tiny kite for miles.
