Who has a good price on Steripen Adventurers? - 05/16/08 01:27 PM

I found one for $80 on EMS's website but was just told that sale price was outdated. I was hoping to pick one up by the 22nd of this month but can't justify spending $100 right now.

Anyone know of any sales on these?

Thanks.

You will like the Adventurer when you get it. Buy some extra lithium batteries & carry them when backpacking...just in case.

For raw water, before UV treatment, I use a #2 coffee filter & small, soft plastic funnel to kep out things like flukes, bugs, etc. I use my drinking cup to fill my water bottle with raw water then I fill my hyration bag with the treated bottle water.
You'll work out your own system after a while.

Also I carry a half dozen Katadyn chlorine dioxide tabs as a backup in case I got clumsy and managed to break the Adventurer.

Hmmmmmm. Let's see, steripen, extra batteries, coffee filter, small plastic funnel AND chlorine dioxide tabs as a backup?!?!?!?!

I think I will stick with my Aqua Mira. Two bottles. $13. That's it.

You mean you don't do some kind of filtering before adding the Aqua Mira? Gross. I have problems drinking water when I can still see stuff in it. I think the coffee filter and funnel are required for any chemical OR light treatment. I always carry coffee filters.

By the way, I really like my Steripen Adventurer.

Well, fortunately I don't need to filter much but if I do I'll just use my bandana to get the big stuff out. If I am going to an area which really requires filtering of mucky water I will take a real filter.

And I'm not knocking the idea of the steripen. It is kinda neat after all to wave a magic wand in your water and have it disinfected. But having to take backups (extra batteries) and backups of backups (chemical treatment) makes it a little less attractive to me.

But YMMV

Probably too late for your May 22nd trip, but:

Ebay for $80 ($70 + $10 shipping) - Here's one example. This is without the solar charging case. You can get both for $125. I'd do without it - seems like more weight for dubious gain, since extra CR123 batteries are lighter. I can't imagine a hiking situation where I'd require more than 80 liters of water (the least you'll get from 2 bargain-brand lithiums) before I need to make a food stop. Assuming a gallon-per-day of drinking water, that's 8 days worth (cooking water that's boiled doesn't need treatment).

I've seen used units go for ~$40. This is the general search for Steripens. If you buy used, read the listing carefully. I've seen a few that were being sold as-is with broken bulbs. The bulb is not user-replaceable - you have to send it back to the factory.

Any reason for not wanting the Traveler? It seems like the lightest AND smallest of the bunch.

Thanks a bunch, everyone! Very helpful.

And NiytOwl, unless I'm mistaken, the Adventurer and Traveler are the same except for the color and name (same specs according to Steripen's website). And I like yellow for visibility reasons so thought the Adventurer was the ticket for me. Thanks.
