Tyvek jacket

Good question, since they cost $10 <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />! http://www.sportshell.com/ ; Spock pointed these out a while back. I got curious.
I bought an original and premium April 2007. They are definitely light. They are soft, waterproof and make a good wind break. They are not as breathable as my O2 jacket; so I don’t like wearing the tyvek above 65F. The tyvek does pack smaller than my O2.

The first time I saw a Tyvek jacket (not intended for lab use) was waaaaaaaay back in '80 or '81. A schoolmate of mine was a gymnast, and she had a really cool Tyvek jacket printed with a world map from one of her competitions.

I'm strolling down memory lane with midnightsun. Tyvek jackets were sold as cycling wear with wild patterns on them. Circa 1980. I got one for free somewhere.

They work well but don't last as long as nylon.
I am going to try some coveralls for my next winter trip.

I was going to buy a tyvek suit recently for bunny hunting camo in the snow. Much cheaper than the white stuff at Cabelas. But, I found a white "jacket" made out of really thin polyester at a local surplus store for $12. It breathes (really well, no were near waterproof) and doesn't hold water like cotton. I have a w/b jacket that is not white that I can wear under it. Now, I just have to finish the gaitors I am making out of some free tyvek, that I acquired, to compliment my bunny shooting suit. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

So these are completely waterproof? Dang I know the concept of a tyvek jacket sounds dorky. But for $10 instead of $100 for a precip, I'd do it. Does it work well?

I have not seen these particular jackets but I will say that I have never seen one with factory sealed seams. They will leak. I don't own a Precip either but don't expect these to be as durable.

IMO comparing the two is apples/oranges. Depends on what you want out of a jacket.

I would guess they are very similar to Froggs Togs. I have a set of those which I have not tested in really wet conditions, but for around town they seem light and so far reasonably waterproof. I have my doubts how they would hold up under a pack however.
