Almost the perfect mug/pot!

I found what would have been the perfect mug/pot for about $4 at my local Walmart, except for health concerns about cooking directly on aluminum. Has anyone found a similarly great deal on a stainless or coated (with safe materials) mug?

EDIT: I think it was actually less than $3, come to think of it.

Heck, I'd buy it and use it without a second thought. The aluminum thing has never gotten any traction scientifically despite having been around nearly a century; it's just one of those urban myths that won't go away.

FWIW, a stainless equivalent will weight 2-3X as much, but it also won't scorch your lips like aluminum. Myself, I've converted completely to titanium, but there's nothing available for three or four bucks.

Aluminium is a better heat conductor than stainless steel.
The downside is that it reacts to acidic foods like tomatoes and will dent easier than SS or Ti.

That pot was featured on a few UL focused sites I've seen. Our Wal-Marts don't carry them, I've looked every time I go

If you click on the link in the post about the IMUSA mug, you will get to WalMart's web page with this mug. Then, look at availability in a store NEAR you. There is a WalMart in my town as well as several more within maybe a 20 mile radius. One seems to have this mug. If I go to that town (rarely, but I might), and remember, I will see if I can find it and take a look. I have a lot of gear already...

Does anyone know how much this weighs? It would be hard to beat my Heineken keg can, but this holds about 2 cups more and might heat better with a wider diameter than the beer can.

WE're not a fan of metal mugs. Yeah, we know. You can save weight by cooking in them. But try drinking something hot out of that mug and see how much fun you have.

We take a pot, and then we take a couple of light plastic mugs to drink from. Works fine.

Have you considered one of these... Mugs? at 3.4 ounces, and won't burn the skin off of your fingers, trying to hold it, or your lips when trying to drink from it?
On the downside you can't cook in it, other than pouring hot water into it with dry soup or something. But it's great for hot/cold beverages, soups etc..
I personally don't like the all aluminum mugs, because the handles get hot, when your fingers grasp the handles, your knuckles or more of your hand touches the hot cup portion causing a reflex action of jerking it out of your face, further splashing your hand, arms, shirt, lap with more molten liquid, causing you to say something that nobody wants their kids to hear , and your lip skin tends to burn on the hot cups lip. Just a thought...

Two of the hard plastic ziploc containers. Add a custom cozy made of reflectix and duct tape for cold weather backpacking. Cheap, effective, easy to replace, lightest solution in the store. Add lids and you can safely pack crackers, eggs, firestarter, small kitchen items like spice containers...

Redneck solutions - so anti-REI of me. But I have GSI mugs, stainless glacier cup, X Bowl and X Cup (folding silicon things) - and still go back to ziploc containers.

I use the .7 L imusa mug. I have recently cut the handle off, for better pack-ability. The smaller .7 L cup weighs 70.6 grams.
The Walmart I used to buy these from has stopped stocking them. I would get them for less than $2. They are pretty rigid for aluminum.

do you cook in the aluminum mug?

Generally I just boil water. But, my daughter cooks ramen in it. The trick with ramen is cleaning all the oil off of it afterwards. I need to try cooking ramen freezerbag style.

I have a grease pot that has a spout and looks a lot like a kettle. It is made by IMUSA as well and is aluminum. I put that in the fire to boil water all the time. It is the one on the bottom left in the picture.
