Alcohol vs Alcohol gel? - 01/11/13 04:17 PM
I'm wondering if anyone has tried to compare these fuels in a Trangia type burner?
Will the gel melt when the burner is preheated and allow the stove to function?
Does the gel pack more heat per oz.?

If it’s like the sterno jellied alcohol, I’d stay away from it. It’s hard to light and keep going in the cold. Also liquid alcy is much lighter.
And my two trangia tips for the day:
1. If you ever use normal alcy, don’t snuff it out w/ the lid. That usually burns the o-ring.
2. There are much lighter alcy stoves out there.

Never tried it in a triangia, but the gel has less heat potential. In order to make it gel, they have to add stuff that don't burn, like water. That makes it heavier, with a lower heating value.
