Thermarest Sleeping Bags

As you all know, I have a genetic weakness for Cascade Designs "ultralight" gear. (And we all know what evolution theory predicts for genetic weaknesses. )

Anyhow, I have an unnatural affection for my Western Mountaineering sleeping bags, and am not likely to abandon them anytime soon. However, I'm fascinated by the two lighter Thermarest sleeping bags (Haven 20 and Alpine 35 blanket.) Both are "bottomless" bags, in the pound-and-a-half range.

Just curious whether anyone has any experience, or thoughts, on these two bags. In particular, I'm curious as to how a side sleeper could use the Haven without burying your face in the side of the hood.

I used a Haven 20 extensively last year and it's nice for a first effort. I found the temp rating a little optimistic and would like to see some improvements: uprate the down or add more for extra loft, enlarge the hood opening (or add a short zip) enough so anybody can enter or exit via that as an option to the bottom opening and allow arms and shoulders out on warm nights.

It's very roomy and comfortable and yes, a side sleeper will end facing inside the hood because you need to keep the bag aligned with the opening facing downward.

The shell fabric has good dwr but the lining sheds a lot of down, might need calendering.

I personally would never like my bag to be attached to the sleeping pad. I cannot sleep in a stretched out position. I like to curl up. When I roll, toss, turn, curl, I want my hood and bag to go with me. It might be a good solution for children who cannot stay on top of their sleeping pad! Now if someone could design a flexible sleeping pad!
