Off! Clip on repellent

Anybody used one of these yet?

It doesn't look like you'd clip it on to use while you're walking, but it might be handy in the evening in camp. The fact that you don't have to smear the stuff all over you would seem to be an advantage, but I'm wondering what a light breeze would do to the effect?

I might just have to give it a try - what's a few more mosquito bites among friends?

Have you weighed it yet? And how long do the cartridges last?

Consumer Reports was not impressed.

.....and the label says not to breathe the vapor!!! Can't be good for 'ya.

I haven't bought it - just saw the ad on TV and looked it up on the website. My quick look didn't reveal the weight.

Considering that the whole concept is based on putting you in the middle of the vapor, I'll probably skip testing it myself and rely on the less-than-glowing review from Consumer Reports. Let's see, where did I put my roll-on DEET...

There might be an 'ultralite' application for this stuff...maybe to hang on hammock lines or tarps. Couple of drops on a cotton ball?

Being a poor dumb accountant, I only understood about every fourth word in the fact sheet.

I find it makes a awsome sweetner in my morning coffee! I havent been bitten bye a single bug since? For Gosh sake People, Me Included, LOL ,Leave them alone! Truth fully though, If you pour Malathion on the muffler of your leaf blower it does help keep bugs away! Might keep the wife away too though. Use caution, and for the sake of common sense KEEP A FIRE EXTINGUSHER HANDY. FIRE Suit was a plus as well!

Someone in my hiking group actually wore one of these on her belt, one hike.

I have no idea how well it worked - the rest of us were trying to stay ahead of her so we didn't have to hike in the fumes!

Don't recall her bringing it on subsequent hikes, come to think of it.

Who makes DEET in a roll on version? I've been using the Deep Woods Off (100% DEET liquid in a pump) for so long I haven't looked at other options in a while.

I've still got an old Cutter's stick version (as opposed to spray) - not even sure where it is, or if it's got any active ingredients still, well, active.

What I've actually been using for the last year or so are those little wipes (I forget if they're Cutter or Off.)

I am kinda wondering off topic, but do people run into problems with using bug dope and fishing? I've heard the fish can smell deet and I try to avoid getting any on my lures, but some cross contamination is inevitable.

Last year on a trip was the worst for bugs and fishing. I kind of figured it was because there were so many dead mosquitoes in the water the fish were to full to chase my bait. Obviously though also since the bugs were so bad I used more deet than normal. Just wondering what other experiences were.

I've been using BioUD for a couple years now. It's an organic compound extracted from wild tomato plants.

I've never been that impressed with DEET, and hate the smell and oily feel, and the fact that it really only works if you put it on your skin.

I use BioUD mostly for repelling Ticks, we don't have many mosquitos here, and I put it mostly on my clothes, but you can also use it on your skin too and doesn't have the oily feel of DEET.

I find BioUD is quite a bit more tolerable, but it too has an odor. It's not a chemical odor, it's a natural one, although it's not as nice as roses, it doesn't really smell foul or nasty either.

The "fact sheet" should be evaluated in light of the "fact sheet" on DEET. Both have toxicity issues. I never considered the device because it simply does not seem to be effective. You would have to spray a lot of repellant to achieve any protection and it would not last for a 10-day trip. I am a proponent of the "cover up" method- loose fitting clothing, head net and gloves.

As for natural products, I have used tar-based soap and repellent from Finland. The soap is OK, leaves a somewhat pleasant smoky smell, not too strong. The repellent looked, smelled, felt like creosote on skin, not at all appealing, but both were efficient, at least against Scandinavian Flying Nuisance.
For camp repellent, why not use coils? They are quite good indoors and in semi-enclosed areas (and I like the smell...)

I've used the blue one while camping and I did notice a reduction in the biting little nasty things around me while those that were not near me got bit. Maybe I just smell... I don't know. I HATE having spray on or roll on bug repellent on me. I will say that the Thermacell works even better than the Off Clip-on but It's sort of bulky to be packing with
