The only way you can hike in sweltering weather and not have the Teva’s smell is to wear socks. This may also be true with keens. It may look dorky, but socks are incredibly practical and will keep your feet cooler than not wearing socks.

Several years ago I started wearing Nike StrapRunners and haven't looked back. There is nothing in them to smell and I do run in them. Strap Runners are much more open than Keen's or what I call "hybrid" (cross between a trail runner and a sandal) shoes.

Only thing is, I don't hike in sandals anymore. Too many sticks jammed under my toes and into my feet. Trail dirt and stick wounds don't mix when you are miles from help.

Have you taken a look at the Crocs Trailbreakers? I haven't hiked with mine, yet, but they are comfy and no smell around town. That is with and without socks.

In everything it's about being careful. (As everyone here already knows.) We're already taking risk just engaging in our favorite activity. Any time spent hiking in sandals, or even barefoot, to me means being even more careful. I'm always amazed how much "sloppier" my walking becomes with every cover up of my feet. Fortunately, Maine winters override my need to be bare and free. So also do long stretches of pointy sharp rocks underfoot.

As for the stench. Any anti-bacterial soles seem to help me, but they're not quite enough of a solution. Frequent airing during stops, or even brook rinsings (then drying before re-strapping) helps me a lot. But I work outside all year long and these things are second nature
