What if my hikers have flat soles, how will straps work?

You'll be OK but the straps will wear more quickly. They run under the shoe just like if you had a heel.

There are also gaiters that have no under shoe strap. They are held on by velcro at the back of the heel.

To prevent the straps from wearing out, snip some climbing webbing the same length as your strap over the bottom strap. Then, the climbing webbing wears out, not your strap.

You could replace the strap with wire. I've done that when the strap broke.

I use OR gaiters. They attach to the boot/shoe with a hook that goes under a lace. They also have elastic in both ends to keep things tight.

I do not use straps that go under the shoe/boot. The gaiters stay in place very well without the straps...

Also you can smear Shoe Goo in the straps. When it dries it's VERY wear resistant. It is formulated to repair shoe soles and works well for me. I use replaceable Taslan boot laces (Shoe-Gooed, of course) for my gaiters.
