hiking clothes for big guys - 10/17/08 05:55 PM

Does anyone know where I can buy some decent convertable nylon hiking pants in larger sizes? I am 6'3" 320 lbs with a 46 inch waist and 32 inch inseam. I have looked around everywhere (campmor, rei, sierratradingpost, gearx, etc..) and no one seems to sell hiking wear for big and tall folks. Walmart used to sell some board shorts that worked very well for summer hiking, but I don't really have anything to wear for colder weather backpacking. Was just wondering if anyone knew of a "big and tall" hiking store or something. Thanks!

LLBean and Cabelas both sell Talls in bigger sizes.

Cabelas Trail Pants, even waist sizes to 50 inches, free hemming:

Cabelas Trailhiker pants, to size 52, free hemming:

in either case I'd be tempted to order them umhemmed and take the pants to a local tailor for hemming.

I know these aren't zip offs, but I hope this helps. Happy trails.

They go to XXL in 32".
My husband wears them (he is 6'4" and not a small man).

Ken, all those you listed are 100% cotton.

Here is one you might not have thought of. The brand is 5.11 tactical. They are mostly worn by Law Enforcement. 5.11
This isn't the only place they are sold, you might find them locally.

Take a look at REI - they go up to 4XL in some kit.

Oops. Sorry.

BassPro sells a convertible pant that comes in larger sizes. They are also very inexpensive, I think my wife paid $19.99 for mine. They are also not cotton.

Yeah, I'm familiar. I work in law enforcement and I wear them all the time. Problem is, they make their clothing out of heavy duty cotton/nylon ripstop like material and it isn't very comfortable on the trail. It's great for any kind of tactical training, but not very lightweight or flexible.

I thought the same thing, that they are made from the same material as BDUs (cotton/poly). But the link I provided shows them made out of poly/rayon. They might also make a nylon version.

Is it just me or did no one else catch the , 'TINYURL', sarcasm

5.11 just came out with a Summer weight fabric that should provide easier wear for hiking, though I have'nt tried them.

Another option would be to take a favorite pair of shorts into to a tailor with the bottoms/legs of a pair of pants that maybe had the seat or belt loops damaged and have them sewn on with a zipper. If you're that size who's going to make a crack about yer hiking attire in the backcountry
