cuben sewing probs - 05/31/08 05:14 AM

I have a seamstress who does my crazy requests from time to time. I've recently asked her to put some cuben draught stoppers om my heavily modified sleeping bag (now turned into a quilt).

She's having trouble with the cuben fibre though. Her machine apparently get's to a halt when attempting to sew the cuben. She's tried several needles and threads but still no go. What's the secret ?

double the seam area to have more material to sew.

use bonded poly 45

use a teflon foot

As always Crackers has the magic answer to the unobtanium fabric questions. Cuben sounds like its much tougher to deal with than regular backpacking fabrics, and that's saying something! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

moi?

but with an industrial machine, you really shouldn't have too many problems. But folding the material over so you're sewing through 4 layers instead of two will help.

And don't forget that if it's not a zigzag machine, you should widen the stitch out A L O T.

or just use 3m 9272PL that you get by calling 3m and asking for a sample...

Is the Cuben on the botton side? The feedog may not be able to grab it if the machine is not industrial especially if the stuff on top has a higher friction amount. Can you explain more like how thick everything is or is it very thin? If the friction on top is greater than what the feed-dog friction is, and it's not a needle-feed machine there can be problems. What 3m 9272PL ? I did a search on the 3m web and it didn't give me any results.

To build on crackers' post, the model numbers he listed are for adhesive tape that will allow you to tape the cuben together instead of sewing it.

but you probably figured that out by doing the search...

btw, hope all is well in your neck of the woods graham.
