Choosing foam for my wife

Choosing foam for my wife - 07/04/10 10:09 AM

I'm posting here because I want to find the best material to accomomdate my wife's comfort. I do not want to pay for a commerecial product. We have three sons, five, eight, and nine. They sleep like rocks on the tent floor. However the missus needs a little more give than the extra thick Wal-mart yoga mat I offered her last week. Since she mainly joins us for car camping, space and weight are not critical. In our first apartment we had a full size 2"-3" thick foam pad from an upholstery warehouse in Southern California where we first lived. Now we are in Indiana and I haven't found a similar supplier. I have found online suppliers, but the descriptions of various foam types are confusing. Can anyone recommend a supplier between Chicago, Cincinnati, and Louisville or a foam type to order that will cushion those feminine curves. FYI she has rejected both air mattresses and hammocks and insists that foam is the only answer.

One suggestion is to find the same kind of upholstery warehouse that you found in California.

One way is to head to a library near you that has "Yellow Pages" books for large communities near you. Look in the "U" section for upholstery, upholstery supplies, upholstery fabrics and begin making phone calls.

You probably need to have her along to test the materials for desired comfort.

You could also just call one of the many suppliers you have found online and talk to them. You will be at a disadvantage because you have no recollection of any of the technical specifications of the old foam that worked well.

With enough telephone calls, polite ones, you will gain a lot of information and probably find someone reasonably near you to go visit and test for suitability. Your wife will likely have to make that decision in person.

If you have custom boat makers nearby, they probably make mattresses for sleep-in boats, for example, or RV builders or sales, ...

You could also look up "Foam" in the yellow pages. I found a local supplier that way. Haven't called to see what they got, though. Holiday today.

Got it! Let me know if you're interested in the resulting solution.

Much wisdom in having her make the final decision.

We do have RV manufacturers in Nothern Indiana. They probably do enough volume to give me the wholesale deal I'm holding out for. Thank you!

For good quality foam in the quantity you need, try checking a fabric store, such as JoAnne Fabrics. I have seen both cut at point of sale rolls of foam and precut packages there. There is a very large JoAnne Fabrics near the Mall in Centerville, OH. (South of Dayton)

You may find a closer fabric store by checking on-line.

PS-

Good foam is rather expensive. I try to find a half-off one item coupon when I buy such items there. Also look at The Flower Factory. I thnk they also have foam and are a discount location. The Flower Factory is on the same road as the Centerville JoAnne. I often hit each store when I visit my mother.

Sawdust-

I have an E-mail from JoAnne fabrics. If you are still looking for foam for your wife's camp bed, JoAnne is holding a 2-day sale on line. The coupon code for 50% off one item is EGD191, good only 7/9 and 7/10.

Good luck!
