Noisy shoulder straps. Gregory Z55. - 12/10/09 12:54 AM

So I am pretty new to backpacking so I don't have a lot of experience with different packs. I just ordered a 2008 model Gregory Z55 and the first time I put it on I noticed right away a scratching velcro style noise the load lifter straps make against the shoulder straps. Is this common? My other 2 REI packs don't have the same material and does not make the noise. Anyone heard of this before? If I leave the load lifter straps loose then I don't hear it that much but if I snug them up I get a lot of snap , crackle , pop in my ears. not my idea of peaceful nature hike.

Think I should attach / fashion something over the straps or return it. It has cool material but just noisy to rub against.

Looks like a great forum, more stuff to read up on.

I have certainly encountered a variety of pack-strap noise with different packs: scratches, squeaks, etc. It's not particularly uncommon, but neither is it universal (as you know from your previous packs).

A lot of times a noisy packstrap indicates an imperfect fit. Sometimes that imperfection can be adjusted away. Sometimes, the pack just needs to be returned for a quieter model (or customized, as you suggest). Overloading a pack can also make it noisier.
