new bike panniers - 09/27/08 05:09 AM

So a few years ago I posted directions on how to make panniers on this site. Unfortunately I never actually got to use them. With a trip planned for next weekend I made the next generation of the concept. I now own a touring bike and could add a front rack. So I sewed the pannier strait to the front rack (the cheapy Nashbar ones).
I could post the five pics, but just scroll down my sewing album, they are there.

I have the next pair of panniers on the sewing table. The next ones will be modified grocery panniers. I would like to post directions on the make your own page, if Charles would allow them. If not, there is always instructables.

Good job on the panniers Turkey Bacon I used lots of Nashbar products over the years I bicycle toured the USA, Central and South America; and never had any issues. Nashbar is to biking what Campmor is to Backpacking

I enjoyed a set of grocery panniers too up until I had to sell my bike. They would be great regular panniers if you could stiffen up the 3 sides away from the wheel. I think otherwise they might sway or sag too much if really packed up with gear from their bulk. A nice zippered top with a water proofing flap over the zipper might be just the thing. Seems I always bought too much food to fit into my panniers no matter how lightly I shopped along the way. Biking gives ya' the munchies something fierce! At least it did me 2 large pizzas, no, I'll eat them here

I think the ultimate grocery pannier might be the Wald folding baskets, but I sew, not weld.
The new panniers are done and here is a pic.
