I thought you might like to hear about my trip.

We tried backpacking with snowshoes and sleds in the huron national forest, we left friday and stayed the first night in an unheated cabin, slept in till ten and then made breakfest and coffee, repacked our packs and sleds and drove 3 miles to the trail head, hiked out to the Hoist lake, the sleds worked great even without rails on the bottom (which I want to try next) they handled the hills very nice and turns only required a few to get a feel for, I used my MSR 22"X8" without tails, the snow was frozen and only a few inches deep, we arived at the camp site 2hrs before dark shoveled snow away for our tents and set them up, temps dipped to only around 25 or so, we found a large abandoned tent and some fire wood in big logs (good thing I used a sled so I could bring heavy items like an axe) we started a fire and cooked some food and hot drinks we went for a hike to warm up a bit after setting a waypoint in the GPS, made more hot drinks after the hike and tried to remove the ice covered tent from the ground to pack it out with no luck, defeated and tired we turned in for the night, in the morning we woke up to the sound of rain and for saftety we skipped breakfest (wet and cold not good) so we packed fast and hit the trail we made it to the truck the by way of the short trail and changed into dry clothes and straight to Cracker Barrel.

I've passed by your area when I went to a sea kayak symposium at Lake Superior. Beautiful country.

And the Cracker Barrel is exactly the place to do some needed "carbo loading"!

Why did you feel the safety need to leave because of rain and cold? I know this sounds like a stupid question. Was it because your equipment was not adequate for the weather? Would you have taken different equipment given a choice? Will you take different equipment the next time? What if you were 20 miles in? Do you suppose someone intended to return and use that tent? I've learned the hard way to never touch any gear that I "find" in the wilderness.
