Sleeping bags

Sleeping bags - 03/26/10 10:29 AM

So I have been looking around at some sleeping bags. I need to get one for when I start packing this summer. I will be packing mostly around the Uintas and the Rockies. Starting sometime in may, going until the end of summer.

As of right now I am 5' 8" 250 lbs(working on getting that down before I start backpacking)

What I have found so far that I am debating between are the:

Big Agnes Encampment 15 deg

The North Face Cat's Meow BX Long (20 deg):

I would love to get some input, or even some suggestions. I would prefer to stay around the 160 range, but I am willing to pay up to ~200 if the bag is worth it.

Probably the most touted budget bag on the majority of forums is Campmor's 20 degree down bag. It weighs less than 2Lb and is considered to have a pretty accurate temp rating. Best of all it costs $130 with free shipping.

Out of the bags that you mentioned-- I would probably opt for the Cat's Meow-- I know that it is a synthetic bag, but I believe the Encampment is going to be too much bag for what is largely a summer need, at least at the moment.

I assume you are talking about:

I hadn't actually looked at that one. I really like the specs, and the price of it.

That is the one.

If you are an REI member then I am pretty sure you know that they are currently offering 20% off one full-priced item. That means you can look at bags that retail for up to $250 and still be within budget.

This would also bring your Cat's Meow down to around $135.
