Boreas packs

Has anyone out there tried the Boreas Lost Coast or Buttermilk. both packs one BP editor's choice awards last year (looks like Buttermilk is the more ultralight version.) Needing a new pack and thinking this might be a good gift to myself

(looks like I need to learn how to proof read... that's "won BP editor's choice" and the first sentence is a question... we'll chalk it up to too much gear on the brain.

I just saw a review of this pack on BackpackingLight (which, unfortunately, requires a subscription to read). They rated it fairly high ("Recommended"), but several of the criticisms would definitely be deal breakers for me:
Reviewer kept having to readjust the pack
Lumbar pad too bulky
Hip belt not substantial enough to transfer weight to hips, and kept slipping. Belt wings too short. Pack not recommended for those who are stocky for this reason.
Sternum strap kept sliding upwards

In addition to those deal breakers (for me), I wouldn't consider this pack for myself because it's too heavy. For a pound less, you can get packs such as the ULA Ohm, the Six Moon Designs Starlite, the Elemental Horizons Aquilo or Kalais and others that actually fit and perform better than was reported for the Buttermilk.

Your mileage may and very likely will vary, but I strongly recommend trying a whole bunch of different packs with your gear and the equivalent of a week's food packed inside before you decide.

Seem kinda heavy for packs without an actual suspension (frame-sheet and foam don't quite match a frame, in practice). I don't see an advantage over, say, a GoLite Jam for less than half the money.

OM, may I add the MLD packs to your list? I am thrilled with mine (especially the suspension). It was custom made, but it is really the most comfortable pack I've ever carried. It weighs a pound. best, jcp

Sure, Mountain Laurel Designs makes great stuff! I was thinking in terms of packs with frames. For me, a frame that transfers nearly all the weight to the hips and effective load lifters are essential for more than 5 lbs; I have very pressure-sensitive shoulders. YMMV, of course!

I should have included Gossamer Gear, too! Two of their packs (Gorilla and Mariposa) also have frames and the newest editions now have load lifters.

I've undoubtedly left out others; feel free to add them!
