I'm using the pocket filter by katadyn, but I think my cleaning method will work on the mini-filter just as well. buy a scotch-brite scouring pad, (green or red) cut it so it wraps fully around the ceramic filter & with just a few twists it cleans up pretty good.

In regards to your water filter dilemma. I use a PUR Hiker as you mentioned, but I only have half of the hose problem. You see, I don't carry water bottles. I use a platypus water bag. I stash it somewhere in my pack, usually in the lid, and can drink from the tube while on the trail. When it comes time to retrieve some water, I only have the intake hose on my filter and I just plug the tube from my platapus to the water outlet on the filter. Then just pump away until the bag is full. It holds about 2.5 liters, but doesn't have to be filled completely.
